How Often Should I Clean My Carpets?

Very often our customers, after they have a cleaning done, they ask, “How often, do you think, should I get my carpets cleaned?” With full sincerity I turn and look at my customer in the eye and respond with “How important is the environment that your pets and children play on to you to keep it clean?” Most of the time our customers quickly respond with “Oh, very important” or “I want it to always be clean for my family.” Usually it is also followed by schedules and routines on how often they vacuum and move furniture around and other things like that.
One thing that always seems to be missing from every response is, how committed and what they are doing to ensure that their carpets are regularly steamed and rinsed to prevent dust and allergen build up. Most homeowners are not very aware of the characteristics of a fully carpeted room and how it affects the breathing air in that particular home environment. According to Statista.com, there are an average of 15.74 Million people who live in a home that has installed carpeting in their home within the last year.
Most of the time, after buying carpet for their homes, homeowners tend to think that because the carpeting is new, it should be able to last at least 2-3years before it needs a cleaning. A lot of factors come into play with making that cleaning decision like, is the carpet in the living room, basement, bedroom, office or even just the hallway and stairs. If the consumer feels that there is very little to no traffic in the carpeted area then they will probably wait until about 3-4 years before they even consider getting a professional carpet cleaning.

The truth is, carpets love to attract and trap in just about anything that they can, including 6 month old cutie pies that have a hard time staying away from the floor. According to the American Lung Association, “Carpets may trap pollutants like dust mites, pet dander, cockroach allergens , particle pollution, lead, mold spores, pesticides, dirt and dust. Toxic gases in the air can adhere to small particles that settle into carpets.” So now, the question becomes, How much accumulation of the pesticides stated above are you willing to allow to build up in your carpet?
At EG Cleaning Chicago, we try and explain to our customers that any build up of 3 months and over can begin to prove harmful to family and pets. Not to mention the already existing complications of the family health that already exists. As much as some consumers may try and believe, Vacuuming is NOT a form of carpet cleaning. Although it helps with maintaining the carpet fibers from buckling, a True Deep Cleaning is always necessary beginning with at least every 3-6 months.
We always express to our customers the following:
Light traffic: If your carpet needs to be vacuumed once a week, you should have deep carpet cleaning every 12 to 18 months. Have restorative cleaning every two years.
Normal traffic: If you have kids, you should vacuum traffic areas once or twice a week and have your traffic areas treated every 6 to 12 months. Schedule restorative cleaning once a year.
Heavy traffic: If you have pets, smoke indoors, you should vacuum 2 to 4 times a week, and have your traffic areas deep cleaned every 3 to 6 months and restored twice a year.
Extreme traffic: Large families and multiple pets will require daily vacuuming a deep carpet cleaning every 2 to 3 months. Have restorative cleaning four times a year.
So the next time you are out picking out a good color that will match the wardrobe or bedroom set, make sure that you are also picking out the best time and date for that first cleaning within 3-6 months.
